Yazio is good at what it does
It is a good place to start. Yazio is a German app with years of experience, a polished interface and a clear goal: counting calories and macros effortlessly.
Its recipe library is vast and well-built, its meal plans solve the hassle of deciding what to make for dinner, and its intermittent fasting feature is seamlessly integrated. VortLoop has none of that, and if those three things are what you are looking for, Yazio is a better option.
It also has an iPhone version, which VortLoop does not yet.
Counting calories is not the same as understanding what you eat
Here is the difference that matters.
A chocolate-filled croissant is 478 kcal in Yazio, in MyFitnessPal and anywhere else. That number is correct and useless on its own: it does not tell you if that croissant fits your plan, why it leaves you hungry forty minutes later, or what you could have instead.
VortLoop adds a quality score from zero to one hundred to that same item and, on top of that, recalculates it for your current goal: the same product scores differently during cutting than during bulking. Below are the reasons —high saturated fat, high sugar, moderate salt, with the figure per hundred grams— and a list of specific alternatives you can add to your diary with a single tap.
It is the difference between an app that logs and one that advises.
And then there is everything Yazio does not do
Yazio is a nutrition app. Period. That is not a flaw, it is its stated scope. But it means that if you also work out, you need another app; if you go for a run, another one; and if you want to track your physical progress, yet another.
In VortLoop all four things are present and, more importantly, connected:
- Workout: 887 exercises with instructions and 3D viewer, AI routine generator and session engine with stopwatch, voice and personal records.
- Cardio: GPS with map, pace and elevation, and a cell-based territory conquest system.
- Progress: side-by-side comparison photos, body composition from your smart scale and AI reading of your evolution.
- Community: feed, reels, monthly challenges, events and one-on-one battles voted by the community.
What you burn working out goes into your daily balance without duplicating what your watch tracks. Only an app that sees both things can do that.
Consistency, which is the real problem
Almost no one quits food tracking because the app counts wrong. They quit because by the third week opening it is no longer appealing.
That is why VortLoop has a gamification layer that no pure nutrition app offers: daily missions, a sixty-tier seasonal pass, weekly leagues, coins with their store, and territory that others can take from you if you stop going out.
It may sound frivolous. It works: the difference between a plan that goes well and one that does not is usually how many days in a row you keep it up, not how accurate Tuesday's count was.
Price
The complete VortLoop diary —scanner included, with quality score and alternatives—, the 887 exercises, GPS cardio, and the social part are in the Free plan, without ads.
Paid plans start at 5,99 € a month and add the advanced comparator, AI routine generation and photo analysis. The Élite plan can be tried free for 7 days if you are eligible.
Yazio does not publish a checkable fee without going through the app or registration, and the figures circulating on the internet vary by country and current promotion, so the honest thing is to check the price shown to you.
So, which one?
Yazio if all you want is to count calories with recipes and meal plans, you are interested in intermittent fasting, or you use iPhone.
VortLoop if you want to know if what you eat suits you and not just how much it weighs, if you also train, or if you are tired of spreading your sports life across four apps.
