You meet your calorie goal, you don't progress, and you don't understand why. The answer isn't in the number, but in what that number fails to measure.
You've been tracking everything you eat for six weeks. You reach your daily calorie goal almost every time. Yet the weight doesn't move as expected, or it moves but you feel terrible, or you reach Friday with an unexplained hunger.
The usual conclusion is that you're doing something wrong. That's almost never the case. The truth is that the number you're chasing only measures one of the three things that actually matter.
A calorie is a unit of energy. Nothing more. It's an honest and useful measure, and energy balance rules: if you eat more than you burn, you gain weight. That's not up for debate.
The problem is that two foods with the exact same calories can behave completely differently inside your body and, above all, throughout your week.
Compare two 500 kcal breakfasts. Whole wheat toast with avocado and two eggs: protein, fiber, healthy fats. It keeps you full for three or four hours, and you reach lunch with normal hunger. Now an industrial pastry and juice: the same number in your log, a glucose spike, and hungry again forty minutes later.
In your app, both days look identical. In real life, one leads to mid-morning snacking and arriving at dinner feeling anxious.
Diet plans don't fail because of math. They fail because they are abandoned.
And what determines whether you quit isn't the precision of your counting, but how hungry you feel. A plan that keeps you satisfied lasts for months; one that leaves you constantly hungry collapses in three weeks, regardless of your calculations.
Satiety depends mainly on three things: how much protein the meal has, how much fiber, and how much volume it takes up for the calories it provides. None of that shows up in a calorie goal.
That's why someone can lose weight eating worse food and feeling terrible, while someone else with the exact same calorie number barely notices it. The difference isn't in the total, it's in the composition.
There is a widespread idea that talking about ultra-processed foods is an ideological issue. It isn't, or at least it doesn't have to be.
Highly processed foods usually combine three things: high calorie density, low fiber, and a hyper-palatability designed to keep you eating. They aren't poison, nor should they be banned. They are simply easy to overeat and offer low satiety per calorie, making them poor allies when you're in a deficit.
Put simply: the issue with a croissant isn't that it's 478 kcal. It's that those 478 kcal only tide you over for forty minutes, whereas the same calories in a different form would have lasted three hours.

Here is the nuance that gets ignored the most: a food's quality isn't absolute; it depends on what you are trying to achieve.
A protein shake with added sugar might be a bad idea during a cut, but a perfectly reasonable tool for someone trying to gain weight who struggles to reach their calories. A banana before training and that same banana at 11 PM during an aggressive deficit are not the same decision.
Any food rating that doesn't account for your current goal is giving you a generic answer to a personal question.
Don't stop counting calories: it remains the framework and it works. What I propose is adding a second layer on top.
Before logging something, take five seconds to ask yourself if it will sustain you until the next meal. If the answer is no, look for the version that will with the same calories. It is not about eating less, it is about eating the same in a different way.
